Automated Drill Bit Detection

Project Summary

Renewal by Andersen uses multiple machines with drilling operations. When a drill bit breaks, it often goes unnoticed resulting in a buildup of parts with missing holes. This buildup creates a production bottleneck when reworking the product in addition to creating material and labor waste.

Design Goal

The goal of this project is to create a proof-of-concept automated drill bit detection system that signals when a drill bit breaks with detailed plans on how to implement the system onto their machinery.

Design Constraints

  • The design shall not impede existing processes.
  • The design shall accurately detect a broken drill bit event.
  • The design shall be easy for the operations team to use.
  • The design shall function in environments with debris.
