Welcome to the School of Engineering

We are proud to be part of the largest private university in Minnesota. At St. Thomas, one out of every six students studies in the School of Engineering.

Our School of Engineering is a nationally recognized leader of innovation for the undergraduate engineering experience. Our practical hands-on programs are designed to transform our students beyond the theory into engineers who can truly make a difference in this world.

When it comes to academic quality, for the 10th straight year, U.S. News & World Report ranks St. Thomas School of Engineering in the top 50 engineering schools where doctorate degrees are not offered.

Graduate programs in engineering, software and data science are the preferred choice for working professionals to advance their careers through graduate education. And our programs are open to those wishing to change careers. We offer work/life balance with graduate classes offered in the evenings and non-cohort programs that allow students to choose how quickly they move through the program.

Dr. Brittany Nelson-Cheeseman

Dr. Nelson-Cheeseman is a professor and director of the Materials Science and Engineering program at St. Thomas. Brittany's research and interests include materials science and engineering, nanoscale science and engineering, smart materials, magnetic and electronic materials, additive manufacturing / 3D printing / fused deposition modeling, next generation energy materials, complex oxides, thin films and heterostructures and engineering education. Brittany earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. John Abraham

Dr. Abraham is a world-renowned climate scientist and professor of thermal sciences. His expertise includes: medical devices, heat transfer and fluid flow, climate change, energy generation in the developing world, and more. He has produced over 350 publications, patents, and conference presentations. John earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Lucas Koerner

Dr. Koerner is an Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering. His research interests include Instrumentation for photon detection, electronics for point-of-care and low-cost medical diagnostics, high-speed x-ray detectors, open source hardware, and CMOS imagers. Lucas earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University.
