Ian Masui

Microgrid Controls Research Engineer

Center for Microgrid Research

  • Education
  • BS in Computer Engineering, University of St. Thomas
  • Expertise
  • Real-time controller automation, configuration of real-time devices, communication/networking of systems

During his studies at St. Thomas, Ian Masui aided in setting up and configuring the Microgrid. This included creating and commissioning the communication and control infrastructure to enable the microgrid to function safely and efficiently. In collaboration with Dr. Mahmoud Kabalan, Masui created a full-time automation of the Microgrid during his senior year at St. Thomas. His results were published and presented at the IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting in Denver.

After graduation, Masui worked as a Project Engineer for Open Systems International where he leveraged the experience he gained at St. Thomas and applied it to the private industry sector. Now back at the University of St. Thomas, he works on improving the reliability and resiliency of communication and control systems for microgrids.
